Certain Industries Are Hit Particularly Hard

  • Even as states reopen and unemployment rates decrease, some industries will not be able to come back. While the arts are one of the most noticeable, there are many other sectors of the economy that will continue to suffer. When industries suffer, it is the individuals who lose their jobs, insurance, and other benefits that bear the brunt of the pain.

  • Nearly 1 in 4 U.S. workers (38.1 million) were employed in industries that felt the immediate effects of the pandemic and its closures.

  • The travel and tourism industry is predicted to have lost over 100 million jobs worldwide, including over 8 million in North America.

  • The manufacturing sector employs 13 million workers in the U.S. Companies have closed plants and are beginning layoffs due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Nearly 65,000 employees from the technology sector had been laid off as of June 2020.
